mitomycin

A drug used with other drugs to treat cancers of the stomach and pancreas that are locally advanced or have spread to other parts of the body. It is used in patients whose cancer has not gotten better with other types of treatment. Mitomycin is also used alone under the brand name Jelmyto to treat adults with low-grade urothelial cancer in the upper urinary tract (the ureter and the renal pelvis of the kidney). It is also being studied in the treatment of other types of cancer. Mitomycin comes from the bacterium Streptomyces. It damages the cell’s DNA and may kill cancer cells. It is a type of anticancer antibiotic and a type of alkylating agent.
