A Delhi Court on Thursday summoned TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee for allegedly submitting an affidavit with incorrect details of his educational qualifications with his nomination papers for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
According to Supreme Court lawyer Sarthak Chaturvedi, the complainant, Banerjee in his affidavit had submitted that he had completed his MBA degree from the Indian Institute of Planning and Management (IIPM) in 2009. The complainant claimed that the submission in the affidavit was false because the MBA course of IIPM is not a valid degree as it is not recognized by UGC or any authority in India and IIPM was not entitled to confer any such degree.
In 2014, the Delhi High Court censured the Indian Institute of Planning and Management (IIPM) and its Dean Arindam Chaudhuri for misleading students to believe that they possessed Master of Business Administration (MBA) and BBA programs and restrained IIPM and its management from the use of the words “MBA, BBA, Management Course, Management School, Business School or B-School in relation to the courses offered by it as well as in public representations. The Institute was asked to prominently display on the IIPM website that they are not recognized by any statutory body/authority.
“There exists sufficient grounds to proceed against the respondent, Abhishek Banerjee,… Accordingly, Abhishek Banarjee is summoned for the commission of the offence under section 125A (filing false affidavit) of the Representation of People Act,” the judge said. The magistrate ordered the MP to appear before the court on July 25.
