Complaint on FDA helpline leads to seizure of drugs

FDA call center

The Commissionerate of Food and Drug Administration, Punjab which launched a dedicated complaint number and email address allowing concerned citizens to report the sale of illicit drugs in medical shops was flooded with calls.

Within the first two days, the service helped seize nearly 8000 tablets containing Tramadol, Diphenoxylate, and Alprazolam from a medical store in Fatehgarh Churian, Gurdaspur. The drugs were seized as the owner of the shop failed to produce the drug purchase records.

The FDA set up a dedicated “Dial to Support” helpline and e-mail address last week to help concerned citizens report the sale of illicit drugs, giving a boost to the statewide efforts to contain the drug threat.

The state government strictly regulates the sale of some habit-forming drugs, as they have emerged as a major threat in Punjab.
